Geneva airport to city center: train, taxi, shuttle and private transfer compared

Geneva airport (GVA) sits just 4 km from the city center — one of the closest international airports to its city core in Europe. Yet the right transport choice depends as much on arrival time and party size as on distance. Here's an honest comparison of the five options.

Distance and time without traffic

Whichever mode you choose, the orders of magnitude are:

  • GVA → Cornavin Station: 4 km, 7 min by car
  • GVA → Eaux-Vives / Place du Lac: 6 km, 12 min
  • GVA → UN District / WTO: 3 km, 6 min
  • GVA → Carouge / Old Town: 7 km, 15 min

In rush hour (8–9:30am and 5–7pm on weekdays), add 5 to 15 minutes depending on destination.

Option 1 — SBB train: the free ticket nobody knows

This is Geneva's best-kept secret. Every passenger arriving at GVA can collect a free ticket valid 80 minutes on the entire Unireso network (TPG buses, Mouettes Genevoises ferries, SBB zone 10).

How to get it: "Free Public Transport Ticket" machine in the baggage area, just before exit. The ticket prints in seconds — no registration needed.

The train from GVA station:

  • 6 minutes to Cornavin (central station)
  • Every 5 to 12 minutes depending on time of day
  • Service until about 00:30, then resumes at 5am
  • Free with the Unireso ticket

Ideal if: you're travelling solo or as a couple with light luggage, heading to Cornavin or a tram-served area, and it's daytime.

Avoid if: you have more than 2 suitcases, young children, you arrive after midnight, your hotel is far from the tram, or you're exhausted after a long flight.

Option 2 — TPG bus (lines 5, 10, 28)

Several TPG lines serve the airport, also free with the Unireso 80-minute ticket.

  • Line 5: airport → Cornavin → Plainpalais → Eaux-Vives → Hospital. Every 5–10 min daytime.
  • Line 10: airport → Carouge → Rondeau de Carouge.
  • Line 28: airport → Botanical Garden → Vésenaz (left bank).

Bus takes 15 to 25 minutes depending on line and traffic. Slower than the train to Cornavin, but more practical to reach Eaux-Vives, Carouge or Plainpalais directly without changing.

Option 3 — Official metered taxi

The official taxi rank is at the terminal exit, Arrivals level. All vehicles carry a lit "TAXI" sign and an orange canton of Geneva sticker.

Regulated pricing:

  • Pickup: 6.30 CHF
  • Day rate: 3.20 CHF/km
  • Night rate (9pm–5am, Sundays/holidays): 3.80 CHF/km
  • Luggage: 1.50 CHF per bag from the 2nd onward

Option 4 — Uber, Bolt, Heetch

These platforms operate in Geneva under Swiss VTC regulation. The price is dynamic (surge based on demand) and systematically higher than taxis in peak season or rush hour — unlike other European cities where the opposite holds.

Indicative cost GVA → Cornavin:

  • Off-peak: 30 to 40 CHF
  • Rush hour / mass arrivals: 55 to 80 CHF
  • Saturday night: 70 to 100 CHF (multiplier active)

Pro: app in English/French/Arabic, pre-registered payment, tracked ride. Con: you may wait 5 to 15 min for a vehicle — especially after a flight that lands with others.

Option 5 — Pre-booked private transfer

The only mode where the price is fixed before the journey — confirmed by email at booking, with no surcharge for traffic or luggage.

The driver waits for you in Arrivals with your name on a sign and tracks your flight — if you arrive 1h late, he'll be there at your actual exit.

Avoid if: you're travelling solo with light bags in the middle of the day — the free train is unbeatable.

What to choose by situation

Solo or couple tourist, daytime, light bags: free train. No debate — fastest, greenest and cheapest option in the world.

Family with young children, more than 4 suitcases: private transfer. The safety/time/comfort ratio is unbeatable, especially with a free child seat included.

Business traveller, 10pm arrival, hotel nearby: metered taxi or Uber depending on availability. For very short rides (< 5 km), the taxi meter is competitive.

Group of 5–7, ski trip: private V-Class transfer. No other option carries the equipment.

Night arrival between 1am and 5am: private transfer. Trains don't run, taxis are scarce, Uber may show high multipliers.
